European Night of Museums 2024:

From MECIPT to Virtual Reality

On 18 May 2024, the Polytechnic University of Timișoara, together with the Department of ID/IFR and Digital Education, the Multimedia Centre and the cultural project Spotlight Heritage Timișoara invite you to the 20th edition of the European Night of Museums!

UPT Technical Museum (Splaiul Spiru Haret - Experimentarium TM) comes to life and brings to the public a series of unique digital installations by artists, collaborators, students and professors of UPT for Timisoara! Starting with 16:00 to 22:00, Come and discover the history of information technology, from the first computers to virtual reality. Admission is free!

What you can discover:

  • Interactive applications of Heritage edutainment in the spotlight;
  • Latest applications Spotlight Heritage Timișoara team Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (AR/MR) - interacting with a complex real-virtual world using state-of-the-art digital technologies that showcase Timisoara's landmarks;
  • Patterns of PoetryDiscover Timișoara through poetry and colour (artist: Marius Jurca, 13m10j). This installation is an interactive project based on poems created by writer Robert Șerban, under the title "Poems about Miss Timișoara", part of the Heritage in the Spotlight project;
  • Unique digital installations combining art and technology:  
    •  PhysicAI Garden: a dynamic virtual garden with virtual plants and mushrooms (artists: Anna Dumitriu & Alex May, in collaboration with CAPABLE Project and BioArt Revolution, organised as part of the Romanian Science Festival) - discover a dynamic virtual garden in which virtual plants and fungi grow and interact with each other and how different drugs can affect organic organisms, influencing their development;
    • 👉🏻 Games in AR, where you can interact with objects from the city's cultural heritage;
  • History of information technologies: visit MECIPT-1, the first university computer in Romania, but also all the other technological devices to see with their own eyes the technological evolution of our era;

The event is designed to capture the attention of everyone, regardless of age, offering an excellent opportunity to learn about the evolution of technology and its impact on society in unconventional ways, combining multiple fields, backgrounds and ideas, creating a universe of connections and opportunities for future generations.

The Night of the Museums event will be held on Saturday 18 May and will be under the theme of 20. Eagerly awaited every year, especially by the general public, the Night of Museums #20 will run throughout the day on 18 May until late at night, in conjunction with several European countries.

Spotlight Heritage Timișoara / Patrimoniul sub reflectoare is a digital cultural initiative of the Politehnica University of Timișoara realized in partnership with the National Museum of Banat, part of the Cultural Programme Timișoara 2023 European Capital of Culture. Cultural project co-financed by the Center for Projects of the Municipality of Timișoara, Timiș County Council, Ministry of Culture, Romania, EEA and Norway Grants.
