The Polytechnic School of Timișoara was founded in 1920, the Faculty of Mechanics being considered the main building of the Polytechnic at that time.

The first project was designed by the Berlin architect Emil Rüster in 1922. The buildings were erected according to the plans of architect Duiliu Marcu, site engineer Jenő Klein and technician Oskar Flander, contractor of the firm Telek Bank. The Faculty of Mechanics of the Polytechnic University is located on Mihai Viteazu Boulevard, no. 1, and is designed in an eclectic neo-Romanesque style with Art Deco influences.

Building was inaugurated in 11 November 1923in the presence of King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria. In his speech, the King said:

"It was on purpose that the meek Banat was chosen for this school, so necessary for our ever-increasing industrial development, not only to be a factor of serious work in the training of future generations of true pioneers, but also a nest of Romanian thought and feeling and a link between the Old Kingdom and the provinces, which through our bravery have been brought to our old country for ages. It is not the walls that make a school, but the spirit that reigns in it."
