In 1774/1775 the foundations were laid for the Normal School for Boys in Timișoara, which at first functioned as short courses for the methodical guidance of teachers and later as a preparatory school for teachers.

This tradition in the pedagogical field was continued by the pedagogical college established at the request of the town council, which also benefited from the transfer of the state preparation for teachers from Zalău. In this context, in 1893 the State Preparatory School for Teachers was opened in Timișoara. In the same year the construction of a building to house the new school began, and the work was completed two years later. It was built according to the plans of the architect Eduard Reiter on the current Pestalozzi Street, on the land given free of charge for this purpose by the Brewery. Until the completion of the work, the preparatory school, which had four classrooms, operated in the premises of the municipal primary school in Cetate.

On 1 September 1919 the school was taken over by the Romanian state. Due to the increasing number of pupils the school building became too small, so two more buildings were built. During the Second World War, the school also accommodated refugees from Northern Transylvania. By means of Decree 175/1948 for the reform of education, the Teachers' Normal School was transformed into a Pedagogical School, and by a decision of the People's Council Committee in 1959 it was decided to merge the school with the Pedagogical Institute of Arad, the pupils together with the teachers and staff being moved to Arad. From 1959 the building housed the Inter-County Party School, and from 1990 the school became the Jean Louis Calderon Timișoara High School.
