The 2022 guided tour experience

3 February 2023

Timisoara is taking important steps towards a collective awareness of the need for culture, supporting all actors in the life of the city, regardless of their role, to rediscover aspects of their city life. The project implementation team knows that the city of Timisoara always has something to say, to create and to innovate and wanted to find a way for technology, creation and art to meet and promote their diversity and usefulness, interculturality being a natural way of living together in a cultural and cosmopolitan city like Timisoara.

Currently, Spotlight Heritage Timisoara invites citizens and visitors of Timisoara in a a complex, real-virtual world, increasing public interest for Timișoara's historical districts, including the marginal and neglected, by using state-of-the-art digital technologies and digital storytelling to empower locals and tourists to see, hear, feel, but also act, co-create and internalize the city. It is also a reference to participatory city storytelling, which empowers citizens and tourists to direct their technological and cultural appetites. Year 2022 captures the Spotlight Heritage Timisoara project as a large-scale project promoting Timisoara as a European cultural capital, with the first public implementation taking place in 2019. The project is based on digital storytelling in exhibitions with three components: pavilion (National Museum of Banat), street (in situ-neighborhood), and digital (website and mobile and augmented reality apps).

In 2019, the project traced and told the story of the Iosefin district, in 2020 of the Elisabetin district and in 2021 of the Fabric district. In 2022, the project is dedicated Cetate neighbourhood and the sense of smell, in a metaphor of mirroring the real world through the literary world: Cetate Neighbourhood - A world in the mirror. The olfactory sense is present through chemical experiments to reproduce the various famous smells of Timișoara (floral, rose, etc.), and participatory involvement combines guided tours, theatre and dance with intangible heritage stories and virtual/augmented reality.

Educational component is another element present in the project and intensively developed in 2022, by promoting cooperation with numerous schools and institutions, with dozens of guided tours, storytelling workshops and cultural mediation activities carried out within the two exhibitions (museum and street).
