Hundreds of Timișoara residents discovered the cultural heritage of the Iosefin neighborhood, with personalities from other times, in a dance performance, with the use of digital technology and AR elements

22 July 2022

Hundreds of people from Timișoara had the opportunity to imagine what the city looked like before and to get to know the customs of families from another time, in a theater-dance show, with elements of virtual and augmented reality, made by the Magnum Team Sports Dance Club, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Timișoara and the National Museum of Banat, part of the cultural program Timișoara European Cultural Capital 2023.

The first dance show among the four events that will highlight the cultural heritage of the city's neighborhoods took place on Thursday, July 21, on the Iron Bridge in the Iosefin neighborhood, and was enhanced by the use of digital technology and elements of augmented reality, elements made by the "Spotlight Heritage Timișoara" project team, from the Politehnica University of Timișoara.

Foray into the world of the Iosefin neighborhood of yesteryear

The first dance event entitled "Valeria's World", tried to bring to life the story of a female character who lived in the Iosefin neighborhood and was inspired by the life of Valeria Pintea, having as a starting point the exhibition "Iosefin Neighborhood and Valeria Dr. Pintea. A novel in an exhibition", which is based on the novel Valeria dr. Pintea. A family novel  (Marineasa Publishing House, Timișoara, 2013) by Mrs. Liana Maria Gomboșiu, Valeria's niece. This exhibition was organized in 2019 by the National Museum of Banat and the Politehnica University of Timișoara, in the series of events "Spotlight Heritage Timișoara / Patrimoniul sub reflectoare Timișoara".

The participants discovered, through dance steps, the atmosphere of the stories from another time, in the Iosefin Neighborhood, in a special setting, at sunset, and got to know the world of Valeria, with the customs of families from another time, having the opportunity to admire the historical buildings of the city, with the help of current digital elements, which interfered the past with the present, all this in a unique experience.

Community engagement and technology-enhanced experiences in the Iosefin neighborhood

This event represented the implementation team's desire to innovate the way a city's history and built heritage are presented to the general public in an attractive, artistic, dynamic manner, so as to facilitate cultural awareness and education, especially of younger generations.

Through this show, the Politehnica University of Timișoara, in partnership with the National Museum of Banat and the Magnum Sports Dance Club Association, wanted to promote and capitalize on the material cultural heritage of Timișoara through the artistic and digital augmentation of the stories and historical buildings in the Iosefin neighborhood, putting value on multiculturalism, the diversity of ethnicities, architectural styles and historical paths offering stories that deserve to be perpetuated and artistically valued.

The cultural project called "Spotlighting Timisoara's Heritage through Dance/Discover Timișoara's heritage through dance steps", a project co-financed by the Timișoara City Hall through the Project Center, an initiative of the Magnum Sports Dance Club Association, is part of the Timișoara 2023 European Capital Cultural Program of Culture and tells the stories from the neighborhoods of Timișoara, through dance steps, in a show that brings the past into the present.
